Outgoing Tasmanian Liberal senator warns party must outshine One Nation to survive

Senator Jonathon Duniam, who is leaving the Senate, urged the Liberal Party to prove it is a credible alternative to One Nation as it faces a steep electoral challenge.

Jonathon Duniam, the departing Liberal senator for Tasmania, warned that the party is confronting a “massive mountain” as One Nation gains momentum. Citing a 15-year erosion of voter trust, he called for the Liberals to showcase a compelling, policy-driven vision that distinguishes them from the government and the rising populist threat. Duniam dismissed the notion that a shift further right would defeat One Nation, insisting the answer lies in offering credible alternatives.

He expressed confidence in Opposition Leader Angus Taylor’s ability to implement the needed plan, while cautioning against a revolving door of leaders. Although he did not endorse a specific successor, he acknowledged having supported former strategist Brad Stansfield, who is contesting the Senate pre-selection slated for Saturday. Duniam also suggested reforms to reduce duplicated state and federal regulation, referencing recent changes to national environmental standards as a model.
