Outsider Engineer Eric Lombardi Seeks to Revive Ontario Liberal Party

Engineer and housing advocate Eric Lombardi, a political newcomer, has entered the Ontario Liberal leadership race promising bold reforms and a break from the party’s recent history.

During a coffee-shop interview in downtown Toronto, Eric Lombardi revealed his intention to run for the Ontario Liberal leadership, describing himself as an outsider willing to challenge the party’s status quo. A University of Waterloo graduate who worked in Silicon Valley’s fintech sector, Lombardi returned to Toronto after the pandemic to address housing shortages through his organization More Neighbours Toronto. He argues that the party has failed to reconcile with its past and that many Ontario Conservatives are looking for an alternative to Premier Doug Ford.

His campaign centers on a comprehensive policy document covering merit-based public-sector hiring, land-use, permitting, tax and municipal-finance reforms, as well as public-order measures. While veteran candidates Navdeep Bains, Lee Fairclough and Stephanie Bowman have secured caucus endorsements, Lombardi’s approach of publishing ideas first has sparked debate among party members about the proper role of grassroots feedback. The leadership contest, with its first debate slated for Aug. 10 and a final vote in late November, will test whether his outsider message can resonate with Liberal voters.
