Over 1,000 leftist lawyers urge Germany to outlaw the AfD
More than a thousand left-leaning attorneys have petitioned German authorities to initiate a ban on the Alternative für Deutschland party, citing constitutional violations.
A coalition of more than 1,000 left-wing lawyers in Germany has called on the federal government, the Bundestag and the Bundesrat to move toward outlawing the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The appeal, issued by the Republican Lawyers’ Association and signed by 1,051 legal professionals, claims the party’s stance breaches core constitutional values and endangers the democratic order. Under the Basic Law, a ban can be pursued if a party is shown to pursue anti-constitutional goals in a militant manner, a threshold the petitioners say the AfD meets.
The Social Democrats (SPD) have expressed backing for such action, whereas the Christian Democrats (CDU), despite sharing the governing coalition, have not joined the call. Earlier, the German Institute for Human Rights and the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution have characterized the AfD as extremist, which could justify heightened surveillance and a future prohibition. The initiative has drawn criticism from U.S. officials, including JD Vance and Marco Rubio, who denounce the move as authoritarian.
