Oyster-covered dentures in Smithsonian highlight loss of 99% of Chesapeake’s native oysters

A 19th-century set of dentures with a live oyster, now in the Smithsonian, illustrates the collapse of over 99% of the Chesapeake Bay’s native oyster population.

In 1898 a dredging vessel pulled a set of human dentures from the Chesapeake Bay, only to find a live oyster clinging to them; the oddity was later deposited at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Curator John Pfeiffer notes that oysters naturally cement themselves to any solid substrate, a fact that once meant the bay was teeming with reefs covering the seabed. Intensive commercial harvesting, destructive dredging, industrial pollution, runoff and parasitic diseases such as MSX and Dermo have driven the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) to a decline of more than 99 percent, representing one of America’s most severe ecological collapses.

The loss has crippled the bay’s water-filtering capacity, extending the time needed to clean its volume from days to nearly a year. Scientists and state agencies are now deploying artificial reefs and billions of hatchery-raised oysters to restore the population, though progress remains slow. The denture specimen serves as a tangible reminder of the bay’s former abundance and the urgent need for conservation.
