Padres' newcomer Casey Mize endures toughest debut as Diamondbacks rout

Casey Mize's first appearance for the San Diego Padres resulted in a 10-4 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks, as he gave up eight earned runs on nine hits in just 3.1 innings, the most he has ever allowed in a start. After a solid start, the Diamondbacks struck in the third inning with a Tim Tawa home run and then unraveled Mize's outing with a string of hits and a walk that loaded the bases. Mize admitted he was off his rhythm, citing a brief 11-day hiatus and the adjustment to a new team and league.

Padres manager Craig Stammen pointed to the disruption of the recent trade, travel, and the high-altitude conditions at Chase Field as contributing factors. Despite the rough debut, Mize accepted full responsibility and vowed to pitch better, while the Padres remain confident he will return to form. He is also scheduled to catch up with former Tigers teammate Tarik Skubal, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers, for a lunch in Scottsdale.
