Paris label Matières Fécales surges into global spotlight with celebrity red-carpet looks

The Paris-based luxury label Matières Fécales, founded by Steven Raj Bhaskaran and Hannah Rose Dalton, has rapidly become a favorite of top celebrities and major retailers.

Matières Fécales, the high-end label founded by Steven Raj Bhaskaran and Hannah Rose Dalton, began as a student venture at Collège LaSalle Montréal and sold early pieces on Depop before debuting at Paris Fashion Week. The designers chose a French version of a crude term to highlight the industry’s excesses, a choice they say sounds more glamorous. Their striking aesthetic—feathered gowns, white makeup, shaved heads—has attracted stylists such as Law Roach and Brad Goreski, leading to appearances on Zendaya at the “Odyssey” premiere, Lady Gaga at the Grammys, and Kylie Jenner in a Dunkin’ commercial.

In 2024 Dover Street Market, led by president Adrian Joffe, partnered with the brand, offering resources for scaling production. Recent runway shows, including “The Other” with Christian Louboutin’s red sole and “The One Percent” featuring dollar-bill masks, have sparked commentary on wealth and identity, drawing attention from figures like Sarah Paulson and Demi Moore at high-profile events.

Why it matters

The brand’s rise shows how disruptive design can reshape luxury fashion and influence mainstream celebrity style.
