Patriots cut linebacker Otis Reese as training camp gets underway

During the sixth day of New England Patriots’ training camp, the team decided to part ways with linebacker Otis Reese, a former practice-squad member signed in November. Reese, on a minimum contract and without game action for almost a year and a half, was always on the bubble and his release was not surprising. The decision opens one of the 91 roster spots, with 90 already filled, including roster-exempt tackle Lorenz Metz.

The Patriots may look to recent free-agency workouts, such as safeties Eric Butler and Tysheem Johnson, to fill the vacancy. The move reduces the linebacker group from nine to eight, leaving starters Robert Spillane and Christian Elliss, with backups K.J. Britt, Chad Muma and undrafted rookie Khalil Jacobs.

Because Reese’s salary was non-guaranteed, the cut does not affect the team’s $33.7 million cap surplus. Miguel Benzan noted the Patriots remain among the league’s most cap-flexible clubs.
