Peru and Mexico Restore Diplomatic Ties and Grant Safe-Conduct to Ex-Prime Minister
Peru and Mexico announced the re-establishment of diplomatic relations and approved safe-conduct for former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez to travel to Mexico.
Both governments issued a joint statement confirming that diplomatic channels between the two nations are reopened. Lima also authorized safe-conduct for Betssy Chavez, who had been sheltered in the Mexican embassy, allowing her to depart for Mexico. The break in ties began last year after Mexico granted Chavez asylum amid charges linked to the 2022 attempt to dissolve Congress. Earlier, Peru's legislature had labeled President Claudia Sheinbaum as persona non grata.
