Phoenix Endures Back-to-Back Category 5 Haboob Dust Storms This Week

Two intense haboob dust storms swept across Phoenix this week, each classified as a Category 5 event on the dust-storm severity scale. The storms, arriving three days apart, reduced visibility to roughly half a mile and featured wind speeds around 50 mph. National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Salerno said the timing, late at night, helped avoid major traffic disruptions.

Arizona State University researchers, including professor Randall Cerveny, highlighted that only five other storms have reached this level in the last 16 years, making the back-to-back occurrence unprecedented. They attributed the heightened intensity partly to drier-than-normal conditions in the Phoenix basin. Scientists also linked the trend to climate change, which may raise the likelihood of severe droughts and stronger thunderstorms that fuel such dust events. No significant injuries or damage were reported.
