Pogacar targets Vuelta victory to complete Grand Tour sweep
Five-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar will contest this month’s Vuelta a España, aiming to become only the ninth rider to win all three Grand Tours.
Tadej Pogacar, fresh from a fifth Tour de France triumph and a near-ten-minute Giro victory, will line up for the Vuelta a España in pursuit of the sport’s Grand Tour treble. Riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, the 27-year-old hopes to join a select group that includes Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as the joint most successful Tour champions. Pogacar previously finished third in the 2019 Vuelta and expressed enthusiasm for returning to Spain, praising the country and his team’s strength.
The 21-stage race begins in Monaco on 22 August, traverses varied terrain, and concludes in Granada on 13 September. He also plans to defend his World Championship rainbow jersey in Montreal shortly after the Vuelta ends. Analysts note his explosive style and lack of fatigue suggest a strong chance of adding a second Vuelta title to his résumé.
