Poll Shows Strong Voter Backing for Florida's Property Tax Cut Amendment

A poll published this month shows that 74% of Floridians back Amendment 3, a proposal to dramatically reduce or remove property taxes on homesteaded homes. To pass, the amendment requires at least 60% of the vote and would increase the non-school homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, cutting local revenues by an estimated $12 billion annually, according to the Florida Policy Institute. Cost-of-living worries dominate voter concerns, with 94% saying expenses are rising, though only 15% attribute housing affordability issues primarily to property taxes.

Opposition comes from groups such as the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association, Florida Professional Firefighters, the State Fraternal Order of Police, the Sheriffs Association, 1000 Friends of Florida, the Rural Economic Development Association, and the Recreation and Park Association, which warn the amendment could limit funding for public safety and emergency services. A judge recently ruled the ballot language misleading, ordering the attorney general to rewrite it, a decision Governor Ron DeSantis said he would accept despite disagreement. The amendment remains a focal point of the upcoming election debate.
