Powerball prize climbs to $786 million, experts advise winners on next steps
The Powerball jackpot has risen to an estimated $786 million for Wednesday’s draw, the ninth-largest in the game’s history.
Wednesday’s Powerball drawing offers a jackpot of roughly $786 million, placing it among the top ten prizes ever recorded. A cash option would provide an estimated $341.6 million before taxes, while the annuity would spread payments over 30 installments across 29 years. Stephen Durrell, the Powerball product group chair and Kansas Lottery executive director, highlighted that the previous similarly sized jackpot occurred on Christmas Eve.
Jeffery Degner, a research fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research, advises winners to keep their identity private where possible, hire tax professionals promptly, and resist immediate large-scale spending. He also suggests prioritising debt repayment and being cautious about assisting friends or relatives. Tickets cost $2 and are sold in 45 states plus several U.S. territories and the United Kingdom.
