Pro-life leader reflects on movement after death of former abortionist turned activist

Dr. Haywood Robinson, who performed abortions for 14 years before converting to a lifelong anti-abortion campaigner, died of heart failure at age 74, according to 40 Days for Life. Shawn Carney, the organization’s president, CEO and co-founder, described Robinson as a rare figure who compelled others to choose a side on the issue because of his personal history. Robinson, who led medical affairs and education for the group, often pointed out that hospitals sometimes performed abortions within sight of delivery rooms, underscoring the ethical paradox he saw.

He also highlighted that Black Americans, who make up 13% of the U.S. population, accounted for a much higher share of abortions, a fact he presented without partisan framing. Carney said the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision has created a more favorable environment for the movement, noting increased political backing and recent policy moves such as the reinstated Mexico City Policy and restrictions on fetal tissue research. He expressed optimism about the movement’s direction while acknowledging ongoing challenges ahead of the 2026 midterms.
