Progressive Doctor Abdul El-Sayed Secures Democratic Nomination for Michigan Senate Seat

Abdul El-Sayed, a Detroit-born doctor and former director of public health for Wayne County, secured the Democratic ticket for the U.S. Senate race in Michigan by narrowly defeating Haley Stevens, the establishment favorite. Educated at the University of Michigan, Columbia University and Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, he has built a reputation as a charismatic progressive, earning support from figures like Bernie Sanders and the 84-year-old Independent.

In the upcoming general election, he will face Republican former congressman Mike Rogers, who is backed by Donald Trump. El-Sayed’s platform calls for Medicare for All, removing big-money influence from politics, and addressing everyday concerns of working-class voters. Republicans have attacked him by highlighting his Arab and Muslim background and labeling him an extremist, while AIPAC contributed heavily to his primary opponent’s campaign.
