Qatari firm Baladna launches $3.3 billion Syrian agriculture venture
Baladna Food Industries of Qatar is committing $3.3 billion to develop cotton, wheat, textiles and other farm outputs in Syria.
The Qatari conglomerate Baladna, owned by Syrian-born brothers Moutaz and Ramez Al-Khayyat, will fund a multi-billion-dollar agricultural complex in Syria. The plan includes cultivating cotton and wheat and producing textiles alongside other crops. Baladna has partnered with Abu Dhabi-based Al Dahra, which is supported by a UAE sovereign-wealth fund, to share farming techniques and assets. The investment reflects a broader Gulf competition to rebuild Syria and create a buffer against Iranian sway in the Levant.
