Queensland expects brief sunny spell before windy Ekka week arrives
The Bureau of Meteorology says showers will ease across most of Queensland’s east coast mid-week, but coastal winds are likely to pick up ahead of Ekka week.
Rainfall across Queensland’s east coast was heavy over the weekend, especially on the north tropical coast where more than 70 mm fell, while the Sunshine Coast recorded 10-20 mm. Inland areas stayed relatively dry, with some cool mornings and frost possibilities in the Granite Belt. Felim Hanniffy of the Bureau of Meteorology expects a temporary lull in showers for central and southern coastal zones by mid-week, followed by a brief return of light rain later in the week affecting the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Wide Bay Burnett and possibly Capricornia.
Temperatures inland will stay on the cooler side, with patchy frost still possible. Strong south-easterly winds are currently active, prompting a wind warning for the Torres Strait, Peninsula Coast and Cooktown Coast, and are forecast to ease early next week. However, more significant weather systems could bring gusty conditions ahead of the Ekka festivities.
