Queensland launches Gold Coast light-rail Stage 3, adding eight new stations
The Queensland government confirmed that the Gold Coast light-rail’s third stage will begin carrying passengers on Sunday, linking Broadbeach with Burleigh Heads via eight new stops.
Queensland officials announced that the third phase of the Gold Coast light-rail network will open to riders on Sunday, creating a direct link between Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads. The 6.7-kilometre stretch, built since July 2022, now carries a price tag of $1.55 billion, a significant increase from the initially projected $709 million. Eight additional stations will serve communities such as Mermaid Beach, Miami and Christine Avenue.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg highlighted that a fixed fare of 50 cents will provide a low-cost option for commuters. The extension is intended to reduce congestion, support local businesses and improve movement between key tourist spots ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The rollout marks the latest milestone in the state’s effort to expand public-transport infrastructure.
