Rahane credits Kohli and Shastri for forging a tougher Indian Test side

Ajinkya Rahane, who recently retired from all formats, told listeners on the Stick to Cricket podcast that the transition from MS Dhoni to Virat Kohli as Test captain, coupled with Ravi Shastri’s tenure as head coach, marked a turning point for Indian cricket. He said the duo instilled a more attacking and proactive approach that helped India succeed in overseas conditions, including a landmark series victory in Australia and reaching the summit of the ICC Test rankings.

Under their leadership, India also qualified for the inaugural World Test Championship final. Rahane expressed disappointment watching the current side struggle, noting that the longest format requires mental toughness and the ability to endure difficult phases. He cautioned that many modern teams lack the patience to survive tough sessions, a trait he believes is essential for future success.
