Railway Board panels advise early retirement for five senior officers

Review committees of the Railway Board have recommended that five Group ‘A’ officers retire early, citing public interest and a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and inefficiency.

A set of review committees attached to the Railway Board concluded that five Group ‘A’ officers should be retired before the normal age limit, describing the step as necessary for the public good. Two of the officers hold senior administrative grade positions equivalent to joint secretaries, while the remaining three are junior administrative grade officers at director or joint director level. The committees evaluated each officer’s annual performance reports, integrity records, vigilance inputs, disciplinary history and overall service file before reaching a unanimous decision.

The railway ministry emphasized that the action reflects an uncompromising commitment to integrity, discipline and accountability within the civil service. The retirements are being processed under the Indian Railway Establishment Code, which mirrors Rule 56(J) on compulsory retirement. This follows a 2022 precedent where 32 officers over 50 were similarly retired for inefficiency or questionable integrity.

Why it matters

Early retirements signal a crackdown on misconduct and aim to improve efficiency within India's rail network.
