Recruiters encounter AI-generated avatars in early-stage job interviews
Sydney recruiter Lana Kersanava reports that AI avatars, mimicking applicants' voices and looks, have appeared in first-round interviews and were disqualified after brief interactions.
In recent hiring cycles, a Sydney-based recruiter, Lana Kersanava, has encountered AI-generated avatars presenting themselves as job candidates in first-round interviews. These digital representations replicate the applicant's voice and appearance, creating a convincing yet artificial presence. Kersanava noted that after roughly five minutes of an overly refined answer session, she terminated the interview and marked the candidate as unsuitable.
The three instances she described involved applicants for English-language positions who were non-native speakers and used the technology to mask language deficiencies. The trend reflects a broader shift, as applicant tracking systems increasingly filter resumes with AI and some recruiters are experimenting with AI avatars for preliminary screening as well.
Why it matters
AI avatars could reshape hiring practices, raising concerns about authenticity and fairness in recruitment.
