Redwire's Automated Mini-Labs Expand Space Station Research Capabilities

Redwire's ADSEP-4 system, featuring up to four interchangeable cassettes, is automating a range of experiments on the International Space Station, from crystal growth for drug development to biological studies.

Redwire's Advanced Space Experiment Processors (ADSEPs) are designed to conduct a variety of scientific work aboard the International Space Station with minimal crew time. Each ADSEP contains three to four modular cassettes, and the latest ADSEP-4 version can accommodate four cassettes while providing onboard imaging. Since 2017 the platform has supported about two dozen investigations, including recent crystal-growth experiments that could improve drug formulation.

Partnerships such as the ADSEP-PIL-10 study with Aspera Biomedicines aim to crystallize cancer-related molecules for oral medication, while ADSEP-PIL-15 focuses on refining drug quality and stability. A technology demonstration of an Industrial Crystallization Cassette explored scaling production for commercial use. Beyond crystallography, ADSEP units have enabled cell and tissue culture, organism studies, and material-science research, such as the ADSEP-UMAMI experiment on squid-microbe symbiosis in space, offering insights for future long-duration missions.
