Replit CEO says AI is turning coding work into a more creative playground

During a recent interview, Replit founder and CEO Amjad Masad said AI has made software engineering at his firm more cerebral and enjoyable, moving staff away from constant typing toward rapid ideation. He contrasted the constant keyboard clicks of two years prior with today’s lively, collaborative setting. The shift followed Anthropic’s 2025 rollout of Opus models, which Masad said could generate code more effectively than earlier versions, forcing Replit to rethink its mission from teaching programming to simplifying it entirely.

The company now offers an AI agent that translates plain-English requests into functional programs, a capability Masad calls “vibe coding.” Engineers, he added, spend more time sketching ideas on whiteboards and intermittently prompting the AI, fostering a culture that feels less intense and more fun. The comments come amid broader industry debate over AI’s impact on software jobs, with other executives dismissing doomsday predictions while investors remain cautious.
