Republicans face bleak outlook as Trump's approval plunges to historic lows

During a recent episode of the Fast Politics podcast, reporter Evan McMorris-Santoro described the Republican Party as being "in absolutely dire straits" after Donald Trump’s approval ratings fell to historically low levels in three major polls. An AP-NORC poll recorded 33 percent approval, Quinnipiac 32 percent, and one outlet/SSRS survey 34 percent, all the lowest marks of his second term. While not yet as low as the “Bush Line” of the early 2000s, the numbers are damaging for a GOP whose 2026 midterm hopes hinge on Trump’s influence.

Strategists had counted on a July 4th surge and a de-escalation of the Iran war to improve the party’s image, but those expectations have collapsed. Republican candidates now struggle to distance themselves from Trump without angering his base, yet aligning with him risks alienating moderate voters. McMorris-Santoro warned that the negative poll trends are likely to persist as the underlying issues remain unresolved.
