Researchers reveal how fruit flies navigate fragmented scent trails

A study led by Vanessa Ruta shows that fruit flies use sophisticated strategies, not simple reflexes, to follow intermittent odor plumes.

For decades, biologists explained insect olfactory tracking with a simple “surge and cast” reflex: flies fly upwind when they detect odor, then sweep laterally when the scent fades. New experiments by Vanessa Ruta at Rockefeller University challenge that view. Researchers fixed a fruit fly on a tiny floating ball in darkness, allowing its movements to steer a nozzle that supplied a constant wind.

Apple cider vinegar was introduced into this airflow only when the fly reached specific virtual locations, mimicking the patchy odor fields found outdoors. The flies displayed nuanced adjustments, indicating they can process sparse, shifting scent cues far beyond a hard-wired response. This work clarifies how tiny brains decode turbulent chemical signals to locate food or mates.
