Rising Mediterranean temperatures fuel surge of invasive marine species
Scientists warn that warming Mediterranean waters are attracting hundreds of non-native fish, threatening local ecosystems and fisheries.
A consortium of marine scientists reports that the Mediterranean is becoming a hotspot for climate change, with temperatures expected to climb up to 6 °C by the end of the century. The basin’s enclosed nature prevents heat dissipation, allowing invasive fish like the spotted puffer, lionfish, rabbitfish and dusky spinefoot to proliferate after entering through the Suez Canal. Over the past two decades, roughly 1,000 alien species have been identified, 800 of which are now permanent residents, leading to dramatic declines in native mollusks and commercial fish such as red mullet.
Researchers highlight the economic strain on coastal communities and suggest measures including commercializing edible invaders, paying fishers to remove toxic species, and enforcing international ballast-water treatment and anti-hull-fouling standards. While reversing the invasion is deemed impossible, targeted policies could curb further spread and help restore native populations.
