Rosatom civilian ship sinks in Black Sea after Ukrainian drone strike, crew unharmed

Rosatom announced that a civilian cargo vessel under its ownership was attacked by two Ukrainian drones in the Black Sea, leading to the ship's sinking. The ship was transporting goods such as frozen food and construction materials when the strike occurred overnight. Alexei Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, reported that all 17 crew members survived the incident and labeled the act as piracy and maritime robbery.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the drone strike on his social platform, adding that a sanctioned Russian container ship named Yanina, over 100,000 tons, was also hit and sunk. He credited Ukrainian defence forces for the precision of the operation. The episode reflects a recent escalation, with Russia and Ukraine each targeting merchant vessels they claim aid the other's military campaign.
