Rubin Observatory Highlights Rich Galaxy Diversity in COSMOS Field

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory showcased a detailed view of the COSMOS field, revealing a dense collection of galaxies with varied shapes and distances.

The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory released a striking composite of the COSMOS field, a patch of sky several times larger than the full moon that offers a relatively clear view beyond the Milky Way. The central image contains a dense field of galaxies, and ten numbered side panels provide close-up looks at selected regions, highlighting the remarkable variety in galaxy morphology. This area has previously been observed by the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes because it contains few bright foreground stars.

Some of the galaxies are so distant that their light has traveled billions of years to reach Earth. Rubin will return to this field every few days throughout its ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time, enabling scientists to monitor changes over time.
