Russia rejects claims of Colombian mercenary recruitment for Ukraine conflict

An investigation by a Colombian media outlet claimed that Russia enlisted Colombian mercenaries as part of its strategy in Ukraine, presenting witness statements and paperwork. On Aug 5, Russia's embassy in Colombia issued a statement rejecting any ties to the recruiters cited in the report and saying it was unaware of how they fund their activities. Relatives of Colombians hired for security roles abroad, many of whom are retired military personnel, have reported abuse of their family members in both Russia and Ukraine.

In November 2025, two Colombians received 13-year prison sentences for allegedly fighting for Ukraine's forces. President Gustavo Petro maintains that at least 7,000 Colombians are engaged in combat in Russia and Ukraine for monetary reasons. The United Nations, in March, estimated that at least 10,000 Colombians have been recruited for armed conflicts around the globe, often under harsh conditions.
