San Diego man faces murder and child abuse charges in jealousy-driven killings

San Diego prosecutors allege that Ryan Wesley Proffitt, 33, loaded a firearm and confronted his Navy girlfriend, Courtney Chandler, and her homeless lover, Nicholas McClure, over an open-relationship arrangement, ultimately shooting both victims at a Ramona military housing complex. After the killings, Proffitt called 911 and was discovered sitting on the base steps with a beer. He entered a not-guilty plea to two counts of first-degree murder and is being held without bail.

Days later, the same prosecutors filed 16 additional counts accusing Proffitt of sexually abusing two children from 2020 to 2025, including intercourse with a child ten or younger and forcible lewd acts on a child under fourteen, as well as felony child abuse. Authorities say the abuse charges are separate from the homicide case. The defendant has also pleaded not guilty to the child-abuse allegations. The case has drawn community attention, prompting a GoFundMe campaign for Chandler’s family.
