Saturn's magnetic cusp shifts to afternoon, study shows rapid rotation dominates

A team of scientists has used Cassini observations from 2004-2010 to pinpoint the location of Saturn's magnetospheric cusp, discovering it is consistently shifted toward the planet's afternoon side, often between 13:00 and 15:00 local time and occasionally reaching 20:00. This displacement contrasts with Earth's cusp, which remains near local noon, and highlights the dominant role of Saturn's rapid 10.7-hour rotation and the abundant charged particles supplied by its moon Enceladus.
The findings, published in Nature Communications, confirm long-standing theories that fast spin and internal plasma sources can override solar-wind influence on giant planets. The altered cusp position has implications for models of magnetic reconnection, particle acceleration, and the bright auroras observed at Saturn. Lead author Licia Ray noted that the result opens pathways for refined theories of how planetary magnetospheres interact with solar wind. The work demonstrates that valuable scientific insights continue to emerge from Cassini data more than eight years after the mission ended.
