Scientists uncover a hidden 6,000-km³ magma body beneath Tuscany

Researchers have mapped a massive, previously undetected magma reservoir extending 8-15 km under Tuscany, measuring about 6,000 km³.

A collaborative study employing ambient-noise tomography revealed an extensive magma reservoir beneath Tuscany, spanning depths of 8 to 15 km and containing roughly 6,000 km³ of molten material. The research team deployed about 60 seismic sensors to capture subtle vibrations generated by ocean waves, wind and human activity, allowing them to map regions where seismic waves slowed, indicating hot or partially molten rock.

Lead author Matteo Lupi noted that the volume is comparable to that of supervolcanic provinces like Yellowstone, though the structure currently presents no volcanic hazard. Beyond advancing geological knowledge, the technique offers a cost-effective tool for locating geothermal heat sources and deposits of lithium and rare earth elements essential for modern technologies. The work was published in Communications Earth & Environment and involved scientists from the University of Geneva, the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (CNR-IGG) and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
