Scranton Mayor's Congressional Run Faces Scrutiny Over Corporate-Linked Funding

An analysis of campaign finance data indicates that Paige Cognetti, mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania, has received contributions from multiple political committees that are themselves funded by sizable corporate PAC donations, including firms such as Boeing, JPMorgan Chase and UnitedHealthcare. Among the contributions, her campaign accepted $5,000 from Blue Hen Federal PAC, a committee chaired by Sen. Chris Coons that has drawn hundreds of thousands of dollars this cycle from corporate and trade-association PACs linked to companies like Visa, FedEx and Pfizer.
Additional funds came from the campaign committee of Rep. Katherine Clark, which is partially supported by corporate PACs from Delta Air Lines, Verizon and others. While Cognetti’s communications director Emma Mustion reiterates the candidate’s promise to run without corporate PAC money, her opponent’s manager Peter Brath accuses her of exploiting a loophole. Federal filings show Cognetti’s war chest leads Bresnahan’s by about $800,000, and the race is rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report, making it a focal point for both parties ahead of the 2027 House elections.
