Search teams locate rattlesnake-bit hiker deep in Angeles National Forest
Rescue crews from several agencies found a hiker who had been bitten by a rattlesnake in Bear Canyon and airlifted him to a hospital.
After a hiker reported a rattlesnake bite via text, the Montrose Search and Rescue Team of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department coordinated a multi-agency operation in the Bear Canyon area of the Angeles National Forest. Search efforts included an aerial sweep by Air Rescue 5, a ground approach by Montrose Search along the Switzer Falls Trail, and an entry by Altadina Mountain Rescue from the Tom Sloan Saddle junction.
Thick canopy hindered the helicopter’s view, but all three groups located the victim almost simultaneously. Rescuers quickly assessed the bite, prepared the hiker for transport, and hoisted him aboard the helicopter. He was flown to a local hospital for treatment, though details on his health status remain unavailable. Officials reminded hikers to carry satellite messengers or GPS devices to speed future rescues.
