Seasoned hiker rescued by helicopter after river fall on Tasmania's Overland Track

Fiona Weaver, who runs an adventure-tourism business in southern Tasmania, set out alone on the four-day Overland Track with a full emergency kit and a planned meet-up. After heavy rain on day two, she continued the trek but slipped from a crossing in the Forth River Valley, ending up waist-deep in icy water and separated from her gear. Back at New Pelion Hut, she triggered her emergency beacon despite uncertainty about its signal after submersion.

Approximately twelve hours later, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded and airlifted her to safety, with Tasmania Police confirming the operation near Pelion Hut. Weaver emphasized that even thorough preparation cannot eliminate wilderness risks and urged hikers to carry proper safety equipment and avoid solo trips when possible.
