Senator Fetterman vows to stay Democratic despite party-platform concerns

Senator John Fetterman told one outlet that he will never abandon the Democratic Party, despite earlier comments that he might depart if the party formally embraced an anti-Israel platform. He emphasized his 90-plus percent voting record with Democrats and said any shift toward what he called “full-on communism,” such as abolishing borders, prisons, or the Senate, would be unacceptable. Fetterman referenced specific figures like Darializa Avila Chevalier, a self-identified prison abolitionist, and the Democratic Socialists of America’s proposal to eliminate the Senate.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the caucus values Fetterman and highlighted the party’s big-tent nature. Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune remarked that Republicans would be open to Fetterman joining their conference, though the decision rests with him. The comments come amid growing speculation about Fetterman’s political future as the Senate races tighten.
