Senator Jeanne Shaheen joins wave of establishment endorsements for Haley Stevens in Michigan Senate primary
Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced her support for Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, as the moderate faces a surge from progressive challenger Abdul El-Sayed.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen publicly endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary, joining several other senators who have declared support for the four-term congresswoman. The endorsement was posted on X, where Stevens thanked Shaheen and highlighted her record of winning tough contests for working families. Polling released by Emerson College shows progressive challenger Abdul El-Sayed ahead of Stevens, with a 54-39 lead that widens among younger voters and independents.
Establishment figures such as Chuck Schumer, Ruben Gallego, Chris Coons, Catherine Cortez Masto and retiring Senator Gary Peters have also thrown their weight behind Stevens, while Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez back El-Sayed. The contest has turned into a showdown between the party’s moderate establishment and its socialist wing, amplified by roughly $30 million from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee supporting Stevens, who describes herself as a proud pro-Israel Democrat.
