Senior CJNG leader captured after alleged role in influencer's livestream killing
Mexico's security chief announced the arrest of Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, a top Jalisco New Generation Cartel figure accused of ordering the murder of influencer Valeria Marquez during a live broadcast.
Mexican special forces captured Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, a senior operative of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, in downtown Atotonilco el Alto on Thursday. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said Álvarez Ayala, nicknamed “R-1,” orchestrated the May 2025 murder of fashion influencer Valeria Marquez, who was shot in the head and chest while livestreaming from her Jalisco beauty salon. The motive, according to officials, was a call from his son, Francisco Álvarez, who had previously been in a relationship with Marquez and allegedly asked his father to arrange the femicide. Álvarez Ayala is also wanted for the November 2025 killing of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo, a teen gunman carried out the act, but investigators label Álvarez Ayala the mastermind.
He faces charges for methamphetamine trafficking, illegal firearm possession, and army-grade ammunition, and is now detained at the Altiplano maximum-security facility. Authorities have not yet arrested Francisco Álvarez or the shooter who executed the influencer’s murder. The U.S. Treasury recently sanctioned the CJNG as a major transnational criminal organization.
