Senior Democrat urges party to push back against rising socialist faction

Tom Suozzi, a senior House Democrat from New York, told one outlet that the Democratic Socialists of America are expanding their foothold in primary contests and should be met with a firm Democratic Party response. He criticized the DSA’s use of “democratic,” arguing it misrepresents their socialist agenda, and likened the group to the Republican Freedom Caucus. Suozzi cited recent DSA-linked wins in New York and Colorado, warning that Republicans could capitalize on a perceived leftward shift.

Emphasizing his moderate credentials, he noted his co-chairmanship of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus and his launch of “The Promise to America” pledge for anti-socialist Democrats. He also warned that his own seat, a Long Island district that Trump carried in 2024, is a key target for Republicans in the upcoming midterms.
