Senior residents become cheer squad for Grand Forks Spitfires, delight fans

Six residents of Valley Senior Living have taken on cheerleading duties for the Grand Forks Spitfires, forming the "Sparks" squad that appears at Albrecht Field during the team's inaugural season. After receiving training from the club's promotional staff, the seniors wear Spitfire apparel and execute a short routine between innings, while remaining seated in wheelchairs for safety. Players such as catcher Addie Ferguson have visited the senior facility, pairing with individual cheerleaders like Susan Aasand to build personal connections.

General manager Roberto Lemus highlighted that involving seniors is a proven community-engagement model used in other Northwoods League markets. Participants, including Claire Julson and San Juanita Ramirez, say the experience offers social interaction, fresh air and a new appreciation for the sport.
