Seven previously unknown diamond frog species uncovered in Madagascar after 12-year study

An extensive survey of Madagascar's forests and museum collections has identified seven new diamond frog species, bringing the genus Rhombophryne to 27 recognized taxa. The study, appearing in Vertebrate Zoology, integrated modern genetic analysis with traditional morphological measurements and CT scans of skeletal structures. Researchers found that populations once thought to belong to a single species actually represent distinct evolutionary lineages, some isolated on individual mountains for millions of years.
Many of the newly described frogs have very restricted distributions, making them prone to extinction as forests are cleared for agriculture and logging. The authors stress that accurate taxonomy is essential for conservation assessments and that further undiscovered amphibians likely remain on the island. Continued fieldwork and advanced DNA techniques are expected to reveal additional hidden species.
