Sheriff's deputies fire on individual during mental health crisis response in Moreno Valley

Around 4:10 p.m. on Friday, Moreno Valley sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a mental health incident at the 11000 block of Villa Hermosa, assisted by a therapist from the Community Behavioral Assessment Team. According to the Riverside County sheriff’s office, another occupant left the house and pointed a gun at the arriving officers, prompting the deputies to open fire. The individual, whose name has not been released, was critically injured, received treatment from first responders, and was transported to a local hospital.

No deputy sustained injuries during the exchange. Lieutenant Deirdre Vickers confirmed that an internal investigation is underway, though details such as whether a weapon was recovered remain undisclosed. The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigation Detail conducts its review. The duration of the investigation has not been specified.
