World No. 229 Kristina Liutova, aged 16, emerged as the first player born in the 2010s to win a WTA Tour event by taking the Memphis Classic in Tennessee. After dropping the opening set, she rebounded to defeat Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final. Liutova progressed through the qualifying draw, then overcame top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who retired from heat exhaustion, and dispatched Maya Joint and Caty McNally despite early deficits.
In the semifinals she beat Elvina Kalieva to reach the championship match. The victory propels her to a projected world ranking of No. 126, opening a possible path through U.S. Open qualifying, and makes her the youngest champion since Coco Gauff’s 2019 win. Her rise mirrors a strong showing on the World Tennis Tour, where she posted a 26-3 record this year.
