Scientists studying the brown-lipped snail (Cepaea nemoralis) have shown that the creature can fine-tune its mucus by adjusting protein ratios and ion content, producing five distinct slime forms. The five secretions include a slippery lubricant for locomotion, two defensive fluids—a foam to wash away pests and a glue to trap predators—plus a protective coating used during hibernation and an adhesive that sticks to surfaces like glass and metal.
Laboratory analysis revealed that while the basic proteins are shared, their concentrations and calcium levels dictate stiffness and stickiness. Gabler’s group collected the snails on rainy days near their institute, coaxing each slime type with gentle stimuli. The research, published in Science, suggests that mimicking this natural system could lead to new medical adhesives, drug-delivery gels, or low-friction catheter coatings. Materials scientist Kausik Mukhopadhyay highlighted potential uses in cancer treatment, cosmetics, and wound care, emphasizing nature’s superior design.
