Sony Music Elevates Stephanie Yu to General Counsel and Executive VP of Business & Legal

Sony Music confirmed Stephanie Yu as its new general counsel and executive vice president of business and legal affairs, reporting directly to chairman Rob Stringer and COO Kevin Kelleher. She succeeds Julie Swidler, who stepped down from the position earlier this summer. Stringer praised Yu’s expertise and internal career progression, noting her readiness for the senior role.

Yu, who has been with Sony Music for 21 years, previously served as executive vice president and U.S. lead of business and legal affairs, overseeing legal strategy for all U.S. record labels. Her career began at Covington & Burling before joining Sony in 2005, later moving to Epic Records in 2011 where she spent nine years as executive vice president of business and legal affairs. Yu was recently listed on Variety’s Music’s Legal Elite and sits on the Entertainment Law Initiative’s executive committee, as well as the board of Womankind.
