South Australian inmate Raina Cruise returned to custody after premature home detention release
Raina Cruise, convicted of assaulting a police officer and security guards, had her home detention revoked and was taken back into prison following an early release that shocked authorities.
Raina Cruise, 43, was sentenced in June 2025 to three years, nine months and two weeks for assaulting Constable Anthea Beck and two security guards during an incident outside a pub in Adelaide in 2021. Although the court barred her from parole until June 2027, she announced her freedom on social media after being placed on home detention. The Department for Correctional Services subsequently ordered the revocation of her home detention, citing the chief executive’s absolute discretion.
Deputy Police Commissioner Linda Williams said the premature release shocked and re-traumatized the assaulted officer, and the police union called for a full explanation. The Home Detention Committee had originally approved the release, but the department did not disclose how long Cruise had been on home detention before the reversal.
