Space debris influx reaches over a tonne weekly, raising re-entry risks
Around 1,000 kg of orbital junk is returning to Earth each week as launch activity surges, according to a new report.
A recent analysis finds that more than a metric tonne of space junk falls back to Earth every week, driven by a four-fold increase in launches over the past ten years. The orbital debris inventory now includes about 36,000 pieces larger than 10 cm and tens of millions of smaller fragments, totaling an estimated 13,486 tonnes. Daily re-entries are becoming routine, with the United States Space Force tracking roughly 820 atmospheric entries last year, up from 110 a decade earlier.
A notable event in Kenya saw a tall, heavy rocket component land near Mukuku village, prompting local alarm. Experts stress that high-speed debris in low Earth orbit can trigger cascading collisions, while the International Space Station already performs avoidance maneuvers. The proliferation of commercial constellations, especially SpaceX’s Starlink, is projected to dominate ground-impact risk by the mid-2030s, prompting calls for stricter design standards and binding international rules.
