SpaceX posts $541 million loss yet Musk jokes about exploding rockets on earnings call
SpaceX reported a Q2 loss of $541 million while revenue jumped 92%, and CEO Elon Musk laughed about rockets that sometimes blow up during the earnings call.
SpaceX’s second-quarter financials showed a $541 million loss, a narrower shortfall compared with the $1 billion loss recorded in the same period last year. Despite the deficit, the company generated $7.81 billion in revenue, surpassing the $6.93 billion consensus estimate and representing a 92 percent increase. During the earnings call, Elon Musk joked that rockets “desperately want to blow themselves into tiny pieces,” underscoring the technical challenges the firm faces.
He also highlighted strong performance in the AI-related divisions and a surge in Starlink customers, which grew by more than 1.7 million to reach 12 million total users. Musk projected future ambitions to lift up to 10 million tons of payload annually, far beyond the current 2,500-ton run rate. Gwynne Shotwell pointed to the rapid subscriber growth and projected satellite power consumption reaching up to 10 gigawatts by 2027. The call blended financial results with bold visions for lunar manufacturing and massive payload delivery.
