Spider-Man sequel dominates South Korean weekend box office with over 80% share

The superhero film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” earned $16.9 million in its opening weekend, capturing roughly 81% of South Korea’s total box-office revenue.

KOBIS, the tracking arm of the Korean Film Council, reported that “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” amassed $16.9 million from 2,252,930 admissions over the three-day weekend of July 31-August 2, covering 2,409 screens. This represented an 80.63% slice of all box-office revenue, and its IMAX component alone earned $2.4 million, setting a new record for the format in South Korea. Since its wide release on July 29, the sequel has grossed $25 million from 3,384,147 tickets.

The blockbuster displaced Na Hong-Jin’s “Hope,” which fell to second with $2.4 million, while “Minions & Monsters,” “Moana,” “Toy Story 5,” and other releases occupied the remaining top-ten spots. Overall weekend takings reached $20.8 million, the highest of the year, far surpassing the previous week’s $8.2 million.

Why it matters

The film’s record-breaking opening shows the strong market power of Hollywood franchises in South Korea.
