Sri Lanka closes schools after deadly floods and mudslides kill seven

Severe rainstorms over Sri Lanka’s central highlands sparked flash floods and mudslides, resulting in seven fatalities and several injuries. Five victims were trapped beneath mud that collapsed two houses, and two more drowned in floodwaters, according to Pradeep Kodippili of the Disaster Management Centre. The disaster damaged 129 houses and forced the evacuation of nearly 3,500 residents.

Navy and army personnel have been dispatched to reach those stranded, with a broadcaster at one outlet showing troops wading through inundated streets. Schools throughout the districts of Nuwara Eliya and Badulla have been closed, and officials say reopening will depend on upcoming weather conditions. The incident highlights the ongoing vulnerability of the region, which is still healing from the massive impact of Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025.
