Study finds decades-old metal pollutants still linger in road dust near schools and parks

Researchers from the University of Virginia discovered that road dust in seven mid-size eastern U.S. cities still contains toxic metals from historic industry and old pesticides, posing ongoing exposure risks.

A University of Virginia research group sampled road dust from residential streets, public parks, schoolyards and near industrial zones in seven eastern U.S. cities during August 2025. Analysis of eleven potentially toxic elements showed that lead, arsenic and cadmium persist as legacy pollutants linked to past coal-fired power plants, waste incineration and metal-based pesticides. In contrast, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum reflected ongoing urban sources like brake wear, tyre wear and current industrial activity.

The investigators estimated that about one-third of the hazardous metal burden originates from historic sources, while roughly two-thirds derives from present-day traffic, waste incineration, port operations and industry. Regional differences emerged, with northeastern cities displaying higher concentrations, and fine-particle dust (<10 µm) being most abundant in Trenton, Raleigh and Greensboro. Health risk assessment indicated children’s cumulative hazard index was approximately 4.5 times that of adults, with Augusta showing the highest concern. The study highlights the need for monitoring and mitigation to protect communities, especially children, near busy roads, parks and schools.
